Meta suspends AI nitiatives in Europe after worries about privacy

VIENNA, Austria——According to Ireland’s regulatory authorities, Meta has put an end to its intention of using personal data in Europe for training their artificial intelligence technology, following complaints related to privacy.

This group from Vienna filed its lawsuit against Meta in 11 different European countries last Thursday on grounds that the nine mega tech companies are going to misuse private information if their policy shifts by any means based on proposed amendments which state that right now we cannot say what kind or types this software system might involveAI.

These complaints were lead by The European Center for Digital Rights, otherwise known as Noyb. This happened after Meta announced to change its Privacy Policy for its European users, which would be effected by June 26.

Nowb learned that Meta was planning on using this information for its Artificial Intelligence from both public and private users collected throughout 2007 till date. The group demanded that the 11 national data protection authorities put a stop to the recent privacy policy undertaken by Meta.

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) expressed approval of Meta’s decision to pause its plans in a statement issued on Friday, adding that the move is welcomed by the DPC given the company’s decision to pause its plans to teach its giant language model using public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram within the EU/EEA, as quoted by DPC.

“The DPC added that this decision was made after prolonged consultations with Meta. The DPC also announced that it will keep working together with Meta and other European data protection authorities regarding the matter.”

Noyb founder Max Schrems is quoted as saying, “We appreciate this step but we will closely follow it. So far no official change has taken place in Meta’s privacy policy, rendering such an undertaking non-binding.”

“The cases we have initiated are still running and will need some kind of determination,” he noted.

Several legal actions against big tech have been taken by Noyb leading to regulation as it is often known to do. It has been active since 2018 during the onset of the European Union general data protection regulations.
